Joint Japan/World Bank Masters Scholarship Program for International Students from Developing Countries

The 2015/2016 Joint Japan/World Bank Masters Scholarships Program (JJ/WBGSP) has already begun from Feb. 15th 2015 and will end on 26 March, 2015, 12 noon EST.This scholarship is for developing country candidates and Japanese nationals who want to study for master’s degree. Applicants get to choose from several selected member countries. This scholarship is in development-related fields. Students applying to the regular program may study at host universities in World Bank member countries, with the exception of their home countries. Awards last one year and if the academic program is longer than one year, may be renewed for a second consecutive year or a
portion thereof, and depends on satisfactory academic performance in the first year and the availability of funds. There is an absolute two year maximum limit on JJ/WBGSP awards.
The program supports master’s degree courses in any development-related field, i.e, priority is given to applicants from the public sector with a high potential to impact the development in their own countries at the end of their studies.

Eligibility:
To apply for a JJ/WBGSP scholarship under the Regular Program, an applicant must:
  1. Be born after March 31, 1973.
  2. Be a nationale of a World Bank member country eligible to borrow.
  3. Have, by the deadline, at least 2, preferably 4 to 5, years of recent full time professional experience acquired after a university degree, in the applicant’s home country or in another developing country.
  4. Be in good health.
  5. Be of good character.
  6. Hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
  7. Not be a permanent resident or a national of any industrialized country.
  8. Not be residing in an industrialized country for more than one year.
  9. Not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, staff of the World Bank Group (the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, International Development Association, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes), consultant, or relative of the aforementioned.
Criteria for selection:
Eligible applications are assessed according to three main factors: Academic excellence, professional
experience, and relevance of program of study.

Eligible applicants should propose a program of study related to development at the master’s level, in fields such as economics, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, or other development‑related subject. The Program does not support certain other fields of study.

Benefits of the scholarship: The scholarship covers the cost of completing a master's degree or its equivalent. It is a full scholarship and covers the following:
Economy class air travel between your country and the host university at the beginning of your study program and one return journey following the end of the scholarship period. US $500 travel allowance for each trip. A monthly allowance to cover living expenses, including books. The amount of the allowance depends on the host country.Tuition for your graduate program and the cost of basic medical and accident insurance  are usually obtained through the university.

Method of Application:
Applicant must first of all apply for admission into any JJ/WBGSP preferred university. There are two different ways nationals of developing countries can apply for this scholarship:

  1. For partner masters programs, apply to at least one of partner university masters programs. The university will send the JJ/WBGSP Secretariat a short list of eligible candidates that have been accepted by the partner program, and the JJ/WBGSP Steering Committee will award scholarships to a subset of the short-listed applicants.
  2. For scholarships to one of the preferred masters programs, apply to the university to get accepted into the program and also apply directly to JJ/WBGSP for the scholarship.


DEADLINES
The deadline for JJ/WBGSP scholarship applications for the academic year 2015-16 is March 26th, 2015.
